IMAT vs TOLC-MED — what the 2025 reform actually means
Italy's 2025 reform reshaped admission to Italian-taught medicine. The old single national entrance test was replaced by a TOLC-MED filter combined with an open-semester model that ranks students after their first university semester.
Crucially, IMAT remains valid for English-taught medicina. International students who target the medicine-in-English track still sit IMAT in September, and the score still drives the ranking that determines which university they get into.
If anything, the 2025 reform makes IMAT prep more important — not less. The TOLC-MED route is in Italian, runs in parallel with university coursework, and isn't a realistic option for most international applicants. IMAT is the cleaner path.

University of Pécs and Semmelweis run English-track entrance exams in July. We can pivot a strong IMAT candidate into either in a fortnight.
Czech Republic
Charles University 1st and 3rd Faculty of Medicine. Entrance exam in June, application deadline late April — early prep matters.
Slovakia
Pavol Jozef Šafárik University and Comenius. €10K-range tuition, biology and chemistry entrance.
Bulgaria
Medical University Plovdiv and Sofia. Rolling admissions and an entrance exam in September — workable as a same-cycle backup.
Albania
Catholic University Our Lady of Good Counsel, Tirana. Italian-validated MD, interview-based admission. Our existing partner.
